UK-SA Digital Literacy for Development Training Project (Phase I)
In 2020, Geekulcha delivered the UK-SA Digital Literacy for Development (DL4D) Training Project on behalf of the UK Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO). The project aimed to equip marginalised communities with the basic knowledge, skills and attitudes in the use of digital technologies needed to access development opportunities and to participate in social, civic and economic activities.
Geekulcha delivered focus groups (user research) to ascertain skill levels, needs and barriers to digital access/inclusion in marginalised (rural/peri-urban) pilot locations all nine provinces in South Africa. Based on research findings we then developed a tailor-made curriculum and facilitated basic digital skills training workshops in the same locations. The project supported a total of 397 beneficiaries to increase their digital literacy and created a baseline and best practice models which were shared with private, public, academic and community sector stakeholders.
