ABOUT SIMANGA MCHUNU
Simanga Mchunu is a final-year BSc student in Applied Mathematics and Computer Science at University of South Africa, holding additional certificates in Data Science, Backend ProDev and Software Engineering with ALX He has actively participated in numerous hackathons and datathons, achieving notable success as a winner of the IBM Z Datathon and the ALX Hackathon in 2024, and securing 2nd place at the Zindi/InstaDeep IndabaX Challenge in Cape Town in 2025.
In addition, I currently serve as a mentor with Andela, where I support Kubernetes learners preparing for the KCNA certification. This role involves guiding learners in foundational cloud-native concepts, Linux system administration, and networking principles, which are directly relevant to this competition. I am also the President of the HackerRank Campus Crew at UNISA, where I lead initiatives to promote coding, problem-solving, and collaborative learning among students. and I'm also Geekulcha 2026 Mentor for UWC
Simanga is deeply passionate about machine learning and aspires to become a Machine Learning Engineer. In June 2025, he served as a trainer for the DIRISA Datathon Challenge, later contributing as a judge for team competitions. He was a mentor for participants in this year’s IBM Z Challenge/ Datathon 2025 and serves as a Zindi Ambassador and mentor for Openinfra Kenya open source community, continuing his commitment to fostering innovation, collaboration, and knowledge-sharing within the data science community. And technical menter for CSIR/DIRISA Datathon 2025 and Technical judge in same datathon. He recently mentored Indian pupils from grade 8 to grade 12 hackathon in 2026.
The work of Simanga Mchunu
Datathon Challenge Creator & Ecosystem Contributor Designed and set up datathon challenges for national-level competitions, contributing to problem formulation, evaluation metrics, and participant guidance. Played a key role in securing sponsorship for the final challenge, which enabled student participants to access funding and travel support to Cape Town for the finals, significantly expanding their exposure and opportunities.
Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) Mobile Application Worked as a Machine Learning Engineer for a startup, developing an ASR model for a mobile application. Optimized the model through quantization to reduce size and improve performance, then deployed it on Google Cloud Platform. This project emphasized efficient model design and highlighted the importance of cost-aware computing in the South African context. link: https://github.com/Khanyisatechmed/bua-mvp-release
Research & Publications . Algorithm Design and Mathematical Modeling for Efficient Automatic Speech Recognition in Low-Resource African Languages Authored an abstract paper accepted at the MDIP International Mathematics Conference, to be presented on 10 –12 June 2026. The research explores approaches to improving automatic speech recognition for African languages, with a focus on making these technologies more accessible and efficient on mobile devices.
Hackathon & Datathon Winning Projects Winner of the IBM Z Datathon and ALX Hackathon (2024), delivering data-driven and scalable solutions to real-world problems. Achieved 2nd place at the Zindi/InstaDeep IndabaX Challenge (Cape Town, 2025), demonstrating strong applied machine learning and analytical skills.
