Join a journey to hack the future

The Geekulcha Hackathon is an annual event that brings together young developers, creatives, data and tech enthusiasts from across South Africa and neighbouring countries. It spans through a three days of intense innovation and collaboration in a physical and virtual set-up. Throughout the weekend, mentors with diverse expertise are available to guide participants as they develop their solutions.

An open call for registration is hereby made for interested and eligible participants to register and thereafter, a selection process will be undertaken in consideration of geographical representation, proposed solutions, skills compliment onto team and a vision for the continent.

Participants will be free to use technologies of their capabilities but partners will put forward training and enlightenment sessions to help them prepare and building their solutions ahead and at the hackathon.

Outputs of the hackathon will be in the form of:

  • Tourism: Hack the future of connected exploration - Develop applications or services that enhance the tourism experience. Create solutions that promote & boost local tourism and cultural heritage.
  • Township Economy: The future of doing business ko kasi Develop platforms that facilitate trade and commerce within township communities and also boost local businesses Create sustainable business models that provide employment opportunities in townships.
  • EdTech: The future of education - Build tools that improve access to education and enhance learning experiences, especially for under-represented communities. Design platforms for online learning, remote education, or skill development.
  • Entertainment: Hack the future of access - Develop new forms of digital entertainment that are accessible and inclusive. Create platforms that support local artists and content creators. Innovate ways to make entertainment more interactive and engaging.
  • Culture: Hack the future of the creative economy - Create new solutions that make it easier for creatives to gain market access and capitalisation and more sustainability pathways.
  • Mapping Intelligence: Hack the future of easy access - Make services in marginalised communities more accessible, reachable and intelligently curated experiences for growth, especially in marginalised communities.

How it will take place

This is how the Geekulcha Annual Hackathon 2025 will take place.

  • Register below and reserve your spot
  • Gather a team of up to 6 members max and tell all members to register too. Worry not if you do not have team, you will be match-made.
  • Registration will close on 20 September 2025
  • Start working on your idea. The solution needs to address an existing problem and help the masses live up to the next digital narrative.
